Helena Tang-Lim started beaded in the mid-1990s so that she could make a pair of beaded shoes for herself. And from there, a passion, nay an obsession with the colourful, glittering little balls of glass and crystal was born. A predominantly self-taught artist, Helena specializes in tiny seed beads using many off-loom techniques to create colourful, exquisite beaded creations.
After leaving an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career managing an eyewear distribution company, Helena decided to fulfil her dreams to own a “bead shop”. However, given her management expertise and the high cost of operation, Helena knew that a traditional brick and mortar shop was not the way to go. It also did not allow her to indulge in her other passion which is to travel and see the world as a tourist. Instead, she harnessed her creativity in both management and her love of creating in beads to have a completely virtual bead shop.
Helena, now spends her time “painting” with her beads to create exquisite beaded jewellery and objects. Her work in beaded wearables often resembles fine haute joaillerie which she loves. Inspired by the colours and cultures of her adopted country of Singapore, many of her works incorporate accents and nuances of the many people and races. Her virtual shop, Manek-Manek Beads, takes its name from the Malay word for beads – manek-manek and also pays homage to her first encounter with beads, her first pair of kasut manek (beaded shoes).
Many of her works can be found in specialized bead and craft publications and have been honored with international awards. She now shares her work through teaching and selling pre-packed kits and instructions so that others may create and own one of her beaded creations.
There will be 3 days of classes on the cruise, and each instructor will teach ONE class per day.
The Administrative Fee on board the Harmony of the Seas for the 2019 Bead-n-Cruise event including 3 classes (1 per day) is $250.
(Note: Price does NOT include the bead kits for each day)
